7 Commands For Training A Dog

1. Come

According to Renee Dobbs, author of "Training Your Dog," you'll need to decide how to best reward your pup for his obedience. Treats and toys are great incentives, but vocal praise (like saying "good boy") or physical affection can also be rewarding. Once you've made a list of your puppy's favorite treats, toys, and verbal rewards, it's time to start training. Start with several short sessions a day no more than 15 minutes in length and work at a pace you can consistently maintain.

2. Living room

Stay is the signal that requires the dog to remain in a static position until given permission to move. This could include being in a sit, down or stand position until given a word of approval such as "ok" or "all done".

3. Drop It

Teaching your dog to leave behind objects that they may be tempted to pick up is an effective way to protect your pet and save money in the long run. Additionally, it helps prevent ingestion of harmful elements such as poison, chocolate or chicken bones found on the ground.

4. Heel

The heel command is one of the most essential commands a dog can learn. It makes walking much easier and safer for both you and your puppy. Heel training should begin off-leash in your home and then progress to a fenced yard. Take small steps, rewarding your dog with treats after each step. Start by asking your dog to "heel" in a quiet voice as you walk beside him. Once done, stop and wait for them to sit before rewarding them with a treat.

5. Sit

Sit is one of the most important commands you can teach your puppy. Not only does it improve her impulse control, but it also teaches her good manners when greeting new people. Start by having your dog sit, holding a treat in front of his face and giving the “sit” signal. Repeat several times until your puppy sits reliably and gives you the treat when asked.

6. Stay On Leash

Exercise control over your dog by keeping him on a leash. Leashes also protect your puppy if he runs away, so training this command is essential. You can teach your dog to stay on leash by applying light pressure with the leash, encouraging her to come to you. Additionally, use treats as reinforcement for this behavior.

7. Lay Down

Mark McMillan, a dog trainer, believes that the most essential command for all dogs to learn is "lie down." This simple but soothing command helps your pooch stay calm and prevents him from jumping on people or furniture.
