Symptoms
Gastroenteritis in dogs can manifest as vomiting, diarrhea, and blood in the stool or vomiting. Additionally, they may make loud borborygmi (buzzing or squeaking) sounds from inside their abdomen. Additionally, dogs diagnosed with gastroenteritis often show signs of lethargy and weakness. They may have a fever and may not eat or drink as much as usual.
Prevention
A stomach bug is an infection that is typically accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. It is not caused by the influenza virus and therefore not contagious. Dogs can contract a stomach bug by ingesting something that contains bacteria or viruses, such as food that has been shaken out of the bin or scraps from the floor or table given as treats. Most dogs who suffer from a stomach bug will recover within 24 hours. However, some infections - such as canine parvovirus (CPV) - can be serious and cause lasting digestive problems. If your puppy shows signs of nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, make sure he gets to the vet immediately. This will help prevent the spread of this disease to other pets.
Diagnosis
Your veterinarian can diagnose a stomach bug based on symptoms, your dog's medical history, and physical exam. They may also administer blood tests and perform urinalysis. The tests will allow your vet to diagnose underlying conditions such as parasites, bacterial infection, or parvovirus. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, they may suggest abdominal x-rays or ultrasounds to further evaluate the puppy. A veterinarian will take the time to thoroughly evaluate your dog's condition, performing an abdominal exam and asking questions about vomiting and feces. This is essential to identify the underlying cause of their disease and decide what treatments they need.
Treatment
Veterinary treatments for dogs with gastroenteritis can often be effective and help resolve the disease quickly. You can also try using a rice-based probiotic like DiarRice which is easily digestible and will help calm your dog's stomach. Also, feed them smaller meals of bland foods to help them cope.
