Pole vault

The pole vault is one of the riskiest track and field events because, according to pole vault coach Chris Hord, "you're running at full speed in a nearly 100-meter sprint with a fiberglass pole from 15 to 17 feet in your hand, then you're bending it, trying to get upside down to clear a bar in the air.


He explained that injuries could result from competitors falling, the pole breaking, or even the person's hands slipping. Pole vaulters, however, put their all into the sport and enjoy every second of flying through the air in hopes of winning gold once they embrace the inherent risk. Continue reading below.
